How does creativity act?
A lot of people know Richard Coad as the mind behind the famous ‘Jared’ Subway campaign, but we know Richard as our happy creative who bikes to work almost every day. His creativity never stops, and he can often be seen sketching portraits of everyone at our staff meetings. He moves around more than most executives, talking to everyone in the office. One of the first things interns learn is that most of the mail he gets he regards as junk and goes immediately into the recycling bin.
While it sometimes looks like he’s hiding behind a clutch of papers at meetings, it usually just means Richard is looking over something carefully. When asked what his favorite advertisement of all time is, he says, “That would be like choosing my favorite book; there are too many.” He can, however, say that his favorite color is green, and his favorite dishes are usually some kind of pasta.
The first one to say hello, it would be easy to underestimate our easy-going chief creative. However, it only takes listening to Richard for a few minutes before you get a sense for how intelligent he is, and why he’s known as one of the top creative minds in the country. He always cuts straight to the problem, and he understands people because he takes the time it requires. He says he also understands and appreciates all kinds of music, but doesn’t particularly care for Country. "Except for Garth Brooks’ Friends in Low Places, of whom I have a few."
Richard can often be found in the back corner of our office talking with the creative department. The corner is a constant brainstorm session, where ideas are thrown around like bouncy balls. While he may technically have the final say, with Richard everyone gets a say; his customary athletic attire seems to welcome everyone as an equal. That doesn’t mean that he won’t cut ideas or critique them, but only because he’s dedicated to making the creativity stronger and smarter.
We love working with Richard. His mellow demeanor and creative spirit is a key part of the MDB workplace environment.
